National Day: What is it and Why Does the UAE Celebrate?

What is National Day? This holiday marks the anniversary of when the Emirates joined together to form the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in 1971. It’s a day of grand celebrations that includes shows, air shows, parades, and even fireworks. The streets are decorated with lights and decorations in the colors of the UAE flag.

But this year’s festivities are anything but standard fanfare. This year marks not only the 50th anniversary of the UAEs founding, but it also happens to take place right in the middle of the Dubai Expo 2020. The official National Day Celebration is set to take place in Hatta, a Dubai town home to beautiful landscapes, an inland beach, and even a cable-driven railway through the mountains.

National Day Events

Sheikh Mohammad bin Rashid, the Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, announced plans in October of 2021 to transform the small exclave of Hatta into an enormous tourist destination. This region, featuring the gorgeous Hajar mountains, is located a mere few hours from Dubai and a perfect setting to celebrate National Day properly.

If the outdoors are more your speed, Hatta features tons of biking, hiking, and kayaking adventures around every turn. And once you’re done, you can always set up accommodations at the Ja Hatta Fort Hotel, a four-star resort, or in one of Hatta’s Damani lodges if you prefer a more outdoor experience. These chalets are surrounded by nature and require dune buggy transport to and from the lodges.
